His story

Lieutenant Henri Homer Lefebvre was born at St-Philippe, Quebec, on 18 July 1880, the son of Marcel Lefebvre and Célina Lefebvre, née Dupuis. He qualified in veterinary medicine at Laval University in July 1912 and subsequently practised as a veterinary surgeon in Canada.

Lefebvre was commissioned into the British Army Veterinary Corps on 17 June 1917 and was intended for service in Mesopotamia. He became seriously ill after reaching Britain, however, suffering repeated attacks associated with gallbladder disease.

An operation failed to restore his health and he died at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Marylebone, London, on 15 December 1917, aged 37. He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, grave V.A.7.

His surviving Canadian commemoration material includes family information, photographs and a contemporary French-language death notice, allowing his short military career to be placed more securely within his Quebec background.
