Died 4 October 1915 · Aged 59*

Age discrepancy: Age 59 is used here from Matthews, Macdonald and Warwick’s Biographical Roll of the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, pages 15 and 22. The inherited memorial birth date of 23 April 1859 implies 56 at death. We have not been able to confirm which age is correct.

His story

Captain John Storie MRCVS gained the Highland Agricultural Society Veterinary Certificate in 1875 and qualified MRCVS from the New Edinburgh Veterinary College in April 1880. He succeeded his uncle, Francis Storie MRCVS, in practice at East Linton and became a prominent figure in the civic as well as the veterinary life of the town.

For many years Storie served on the Town Council and was Provost of East Linton from 1893 to 1898. He also lectured on veterinary science at the Edinburgh and East of Scotland College of Agriculture. His wife was Catherine Nancy Clapperton Storie, and the couple had three sons. One of them, James Clapperton Storie, qualified MRCVS in 1909 and also served as an Army Veterinary Corps officer during the war.

Storie was a Captain in the Territorial branch of the Army Veterinary Corps. At the outbreak of war he was attached to the Lothian and Border Horse, with which he had long been associated, and later served at the Scots Greys Depot at Dunbar.

He died at home in October 1915 following pleurisy and was buried in Prestonkirk Parish Churchyard. His standing in East Linton extended beyond his profession: his name survives in the town’s civic history, including on its fountain and war memorial.

His qualification as MRCVS in April 1880 is recorded in that roll.
